Universities and schools
The first universitary degree in Communication Sciences in Portugal began at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the New University of Lisbon in 1979. Presently, there is a wide number and diversity of courses in communication and journalism at the level of higher education, both in public and private institutions, among which:

These universities (spread throughout several cities in the country) host research and investigative centres in media and communication studies. The one national institution to congregate professors, investigators and professionals is the Associação Portuguesa de Ciências da Comunicação (Portuguese Association of Communication Studies - SOPCOM).
